Hand and wrist surgery treatments
Surgical techniques explained clearly: what they involve, when they are indicated and what recovery to expect.
- Hand tendon surgery Repair, release and reconstruction of the flexor and extensor tendons of the hand, followed by rehabilitation with a hand therapist.
- Minimally invasive hand and wrist surgery Techniques with small incisions, local anaesthesia and a day-case regime that reduce surgical disruption when the injury allows it.
- Carpal tunnel release Surgery that divides the transverse carpal ligament to decompress the median nerve when conservative treatment is not enough.
- Surgery for Dupuytren's disease Treatment of finger contracture caused by Dupuytren's disease by fasciectomy or needle fasciotomy, when the contracture limits hand function.
- Trigger finger surgery Release of the A1 pulley so the flexor tendon can glide again without catching, with removal of the pulley cyst when present.
- Surgery for De Quervain's tenosynovitis Release of the first extensor compartment to relieve pain at the base of the thumb when conservative treatment has not been enough.
- Wrist arthroscopy A technique that allows the inside of the wrist to be examined and treated through incisions of a few millimetres, for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
- Surgical treatment of hand and wrist fractures Fixation of distal radius, scaphoid, metacarpal and phalangeal fractures with plates, screws, wires or an external fixator when a cast is not enough.
- Hand microsurgery Techniques carried out with a surgical microscope to repair the nerves, arteries and veins of the hand, and reconstruct tissue after severe injuries.
- Peripheral nerve surgery Decompression, repair and reconstruction of the nerves of the upper limb when they are compressed, cut or form a painful neuroma.
