Hand microsurgery in Barcelona

Repair of nerves and vessels under the microscope, tissue reconstruction and coverage of complex hand wounds.

Dra. Marta Martí Puente, Cirujana de Mano y Muñeca en Barcelona

Microsurgery is the technique that allows structures of one or two millimetres, such as the nerves and arteries of the fingers, to be operated on with the aid of a surgical microscope. It is an essential part of modern hand surgery: without it, repairing a severed nerve, revascularising a finger or reconstructing a tissue defect with a flap would not be possible.

Dr Marta Martí Puente has specific training in microsurgical technique and in surgical anatomy applied to upper limb reconstruction, and is a member of the Hand Surgery and Replantation team at Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí. Her microsurgical activity includes peripheral nerve surgery, repair of vascular injuries and tissue reconstruction.

When is microsurgery needed?

  • Hand wounds with severed nerves or arteries.
  • Longstanding nerve injuries with neuroma or loss of sensation.
  • Finger amputations requiring replantation or revascularisation.
  • Loss of skin or tissue requiring flap coverage.
  • Reconstruction after complex trauma or tumour surgery.

Frequently asked questions

What is microsurgery?
It is surgery carried out with the aid of a surgical microscope and very small instruments and sutures. It allows structures of one or two millimetres, such as digital nerves or the arteries of the fingers, to be repaired.
Does a cut nerve recover?
Peripheral nerves have the capacity to regenerate. After microsurgical repair, nerve fibres grow back slowly from the suture point towards the skin or muscle. Recovery is gradual, can take months, and is not always complete. It depends on the nerve, the type of injury, age and the time elapsed before repair.
What is a replantation?
The reconnection of an amputated body part, for example a finger, joining bone, tendons, arteries, veins and nerves. It is emergency surgery carried out in hospitals with a microsurgery team.
