Conditions

Hand and wrist conditions treated in Barcelona

These are the problems seen most often in clinic. If yours is not listed, it does not mean it is not treated: bring it to the consultation.

  • Carpal tunnel syndromeNight-time tingling, numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers, and loss of grip strength from compression of the median nerve at the wrist.
  • Trigger fingerA finger that catches, clicks or locks when bending, often painful at the base of the finger in the morning.
  • Dupuytren's contractureCords and nodules in the palm that gradually pull one or more fingers towards the hand and stop it lying flat.
  • Thumb base arthritisPain at the base of the thumb when pinching, turning a key or opening a jar, caused by wear of the trapeziometacarpal joint.
  • De Quervain's tenosynovitisPain on the thumb side of the wrist when gripping or lifting, common after pregnancy and in repetitive work.
  • Ganglion cystsSoft lumps on the back or front of the wrist or in the fingers, sometimes painful, sometimes only a cosmetic concern.
  • Distal radius fracturesThe most common wrist fracture, from a fall on an outstretched hand. Treatment ranges from a cast to plate fixation.
  • Scaphoid fracturesOften missed at first and prone to non-union, which is why an early and accurate diagnosis matters.
  • TFCC and ligament injuriesPain on the little-finger side of the wrist, clicking or instability after a sprain or a fall.
  • Wrist arthritisStiffness, swelling and pain that limit rotation and grip, whether post-traumatic, degenerative or inflammatory.
  • Nerve compression and injuryMedian, ulnar and radial nerve problems, including cubital tunnel at the elbow and Guyon's canal at the wrist.
  • Tendon injuriesFlexor and extensor tendon cuts and ruptures, mallet finger, and tendon transfers when a nerve does not recover.

Detailed pages on each condition are currently written in Spanish only. They are linked from the sections above, marked ES.

Procedures

Surgery of the hand and wrist

Most procedures are done as day surgery, under local or regional anaesthesia, and you go home the same day.

  • Carpal tunnel releaseDivision of the transverse carpal ligament to decompress the median nerve, through a small incision in the palm.
  • Trigger finger releaseA short procedure that frees the tendon pulley so the finger moves without catching.
  • Dupuytren's surgeryRemoval or division of the diseased cords to straighten the finger, chosen according to the stage of the disease.
  • Thumb base surgeryTrapeziectomy or joint replacement for thumb base arthritis when injections and splinting are no longer enough.
  • Wrist arthroscopyKeyhole examination and treatment of the wrist joint: TFCC tears, ligament injuries and unexplained wrist pain.
  • Fracture fixationPlates, screws or wires to hold a fracture of the hand or wrist while it heals, allowing early movement.
  • Peripheral nerve surgeryDecompression, repair and grafting of the nerves of the hand, wrist and forearm under magnification.
  • MicrosurgeryRepair of nerves and small vessels, soft tissue coverage and reconstruction under the operating microscope.
  • Tendon repairSuture of cut or ruptured flexor and extensor tendons, followed by a structured hand therapy programme.

Resolutiva i eficaç, amb dues setmanes al quiròfan, intervenció de dit en ressort fantàstica i una setmana mes tard, ja sense punts i amb una petita cicatriu, que en pocs dies, ni es veure. Un 10 per la Dra Marti.

Dra Marta is a great surgeon: kind, attentive and very reassuring. She takes the time to listen, explain everything clearly and makes you feel at ease throughout the whole process. She also provides excellent follow-up and care. My surgery went perfectly, with no pain, and she also speaks perfect English which was a bonus! I couldn't recommend her highly enough.

Excelente Doctora.

Treatment approach

Surgery is not always the first step

Every case is assessed individually. Many hand and wrist conditions improve with conservative treatment; surgery is proposed when it is genuinely indicated.

  1. Diagnosis

Clinical history, detailed examination and the tests that are needed.

  2. Conservative treatment

Splints, hand therapy, injections or activity changes whenever possible.

  3. Surgery when indicated

Open, arthroscopic or microsurgical techniques, adapted to the injury and the person.

  4. Recovery

A clear rehabilitation plan from day one, coordinated with hand therapists.

  5. Follow-up

Reviews until function is restored and every question about recovery is answered.
